Then there’s the writing: the screenplays, the journalism, and, of course, the books. He has continued along a multibranched road that has included the founding of McSweeney’s magazine and publishing house, and an associated monthly, The Believer of 826 Valencia, a youth literacy charity and of ScholarMatch, connecting non-rich college-age kids in the San Francisco Bay Area with donors. By that time he was already active in the underground worlds of comic strip writing, small-magazine founding, and columnizing in the then-embryonic realm of online magazines. The Circle is Dave Eggers’s tenth work of fiction, and a fascinating item it is.Įggers’s first major book was the much-acclaimed semifictional memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (2000), which recounts the struggles of Eggers to raise his younger brother after the death of their parents. David’s denied that he’s gay for years, but when he meets Nicholai Markoff he has to admit he’s gay… and that he’s fallen in love. All I Want For Christmasby Linda Reilly: Here we meet David who is spending Christmas with friends in New York. This was an enjoyable story that left you with a good feeling as Mitch started to warm up to the holiday season. Willingham: Mitch doesn’t much like the holidays, but that starts to change when he meets Sam. The bold titles are the ones that were my absolute favorites! Here’s a quick look at all the stories in the collection (in alphabetical order by title) and what I thought of them. So many of these stories were outstanding in one way or another. It took well past the 32 days to read everything, but it was worth the time. This collection, however, was one of the deciding points to purchase a Kindle for us this past Christmas. It would’ve been 1,700 pages had it been a printed, bound book. So many stories, so many pages! Mistletoe Madness: Dreamspinner Press 2009 Advent Calendar brought me 32 short stories in as many days. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Iron and magic by ilona andrewsTasked with their protection, she's trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Undead and unemployedI also found the liberal use of the f-word rather jarring. If I have a niggle, it is that Betsy tends to go on and on about how much she dislikes Eric – while the reader knows that in stories of this type that means that it is a sure thing the pair of them will finally get together. Which I find endearing – and I am conscious that writing a stupid heroine isn’t as easy as it might seem, having tried it and thrown the result across the room in disgust… Written in first person POV, the story might be fairly light-hearted – but it is well crafted and the character is convincingly dim. Only the last time she ran into Sinclair she accidentally fulfilled an ancient prophesy – and ended up married to him… Luckily, Betsy lands her dream job selling designer shoes at Macy’s Department Store.īut then there’s a string of vampire murders in town and Betsy has to enlist the help of the one vamp who makes her blood boil: the oh-so-sexy Eric Sinclair. Only being royally undead doesn’t mean there aren’t still credit card bills to be paid. Nothing can make Betsy Taylor give up her shoe fetish – not even dying and rising as the new Queen of the Vampires. For starters, the protagonist is a ditzy blonde with a thing for shoes. In a sub-genre that generally doesn’t take itself too seriously, this book is more firmly tongue in cheek than most – think Clueless rather than Buffy. This is one of the fluffier offerings of chic-spec I’ve read. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Be Prepared by Vera Brosgol9/16) fictionalized graphic memoir captures the ups anddowns (let’s be honest-mostly downs) of a stint at a Russian Orthodox summercamp. And also made up.” Brosgol’s ( Anya’s Ghost, rev. VERDICT A gorgeous, emotional memoir worthy of any graphic novel collection.- Matisse Mozer, Los Angeles Public Library, CA The text is simple and accessible, but the relaxed pacing, characters who go often unpunished for cruel behavior, and the brief inclusion of an ill-fated romance set this title apart from more gentle middle grade works. This lends a hard realism to the memoir, in spite of the adorable art style, as young Vera earns small victories and an understanding of herself rather than soaring triumph. The book eschews the plot-driven and suspenseful storytelling of Brosgol’s Anya’s Ghost in lieu of a slice-of-life narrative in which problems aren’t always neatly resolved. The author/illustrator reprises her cartoony character art and her detailed yet subtle background work. Here, she relates the story of her monthlong experience at Russian summer camp, where she coped with the horrors of outhouses, feral wildlife, and bug bites, as well as with mean older cabinmates and alienation from her fellow campers. Brosgol has worked on acclaimed animated films, but she was once a lonely nine-year-old aching for friendship. |
